I have a male friend in his thirties who was just informed that there is a local woman who is claiming he is the father of her 16 year old son. He dated this woman briefly at that time. After their break up, she never contacted him. Now she has told a mutual friend about this and that's how he found out. If it's true, she stole his child and never told him about it. If it's false, it's slander. He has asked her several times for a paternity test and she is refusing. His lawyer can require her to submit. Should her pursue it or let it go?

Just to clarify: the neighbor who told him about this said the child has been told for his whole life that this was his dad and now his mother had to admit to him that she didn't really know. Isn't that a mean thing to do to a kid?

To reply to the person who said it's a mother's right to keep a child from a father: not legally, it isnt. Father's have rights too, but this gentleman does not wish to pursue anything but the truth.

OMG I can't believe I have to defend this guy: HE did not know - she was cheating on him and that's why they broke up. This was 17 years ago and the guy is not a slut - he's happily married and they have kids.

If he wants to know his child, he should pursue it.
Neither him nor the child, should be denied of each other if they are related.

That depends.
For starters, it is not slander until proven otherwise...
aka - the paternity test.
She may not have contacted him because she did not wish to have him in her life.
This is not stealing a child. It is a mother's right.
If she is not pursuing child support, or any other financial gain, I fail to see how an attorney can require her to do anything.
If she is pursuing such things then, yes, she has to agree to a paternity test to validate her claim.

He and the boy has a right to know. Shame on women like this and shame on stupid men who can't keep track of their sperm. If he does request a DNA test and he is the boys father, then he will have to step up to the plate and be a father. Obviously this boy needs at least one stable parent, obviously the boy's mother is a self serving a**.

Defenitley persue it... he should've had an idea if she turned up pregnant not long after they broke up that he could be the father. You'd think it would occur to him to at least wonder. But for all involved, they need to know.

if he really thinks the child is his then he should go for it, but be warned that if he is the father he could possibly be sued for child support and back support.
