Every county in Michigan has their own health dept. Some up North combine counties, I believe, and Detroit has their own, but that may change soon. In Wayne County, one must wear gloves when handling food, however, there are some exceptions when one can prove that the proper amount of hand washing is done by employees. Some large corporate, especially fast food places have counters on the soap dispensers, which supposedly give an idea how often employees are washing. It doesn't make much sense to me, because one person could be very diligent and another may seldom if ever wash.
A woman I know who manages a Burger King said they don't use gloves, they use purell.
If using gloves they must be changed often. I watched an employee at a Subway, with gloves on, make a sub, then ring up food and make change and go back to making subs. What's the point of gloves, if they don't have sense enough to change them.
Also, wearing gloves does not replace handwashing. You must wash between changes. Makes for some very dry hands.

I graduated from culinary school about a month ago, and one of the classes I had to take was about food safety and sanitation.
It is MUCH more sanitary to touch food with clean hands than gloves. When you wash your hands properly (hot water, soap, lather for at least 20 seconds and dry with a single use paper towel) your hands are VERY clean.
Those gloves can harbor all kinds of bacteria. The boxes usually sit in areas of a kitchen where all kinds of stuff can get on the gloves and the box. And you have to touch the gloves to put them on. Also, the gloves are usually made of latex, and MANY people (myself included) are allergic to latex.
Don't get upset if you see someone with CLEAN hands handling your food. Be worried when you see someone with gloves touch your food -- you never know where those gloves have been.

I think Janelle the chef is right.
I dont think that there are rules re: the gloves.
I think some place just do this for your visual satisfaction, even though, as Janell points out, gloves are much less sanitary.
I bet you love it when the busboy goes around wiping the table with his disgusting rag too.
At home, I use paper towels. I wash my hands about 9 -12 X per day. I dont get sick very much. Flu and Colds are nasal or eye borne illnesses typically, not through the mouth.

gloves must be worn (and changed often, after hand washing) when handling any food that is not heated to 160 prior to serving the customer. I'ts a good idea to wear gloves even when handling cooked food.
Gloves can give employees a false sense of security. hands need to be kept clean and gloves need to be changed.
Don't scare your employees too much, but remind them that food can kill people if not handled properly

I beleive so. When I worked at a burger joint, they had us wear gloves on inspection days only. When I managed a pizza joint, they didnt ever require gloves, during their own inspections or health inspecitons so im not really sure. But I think the answer is yes--just nobody follows the rules, as usual.
Burger joint was in wayne county, pizza joint in oakland county, maybe diff standards.

I know every place has a different set of rules. I think it would be a good idea. It couldn't hurt and maybe people will feel more comfortable knowing that clean gloves were used on clean hands. I know I would.

Not only must you wear gloves, u must wash your hands for 20sec w/warm water & soap, before AND after using gloves. As well as if you change jobs/food preparation areas, you must change your gloves, washing your hands again, to prevent cross contamination.

yes, any where you work with food. i am a cake decorator and i have to where them. when ever you are handling or preparing any food product you are supposed to have them on and you are supposed to change them if you handle different raw foods such as chicken, beef, pork. and you are not supposed to handle money and then go back to working with food in the same gloves. change them often. they reduce bacterial infections, and are required by the board of health in Michigan
