It's not as hard to live without a safety net as many people imagine; you really don't even need luck. Just will and determination and the realization that you are NOT powerless. You DO have control over your destiny, if only you stop believing that you don't.

If you're tired of living paycheck-to-paycheck, then switch jobs. Get job training. Go back to school, don't think school is just for young people either.

Set aside just 5% of your paycheck into something better than simply having it in a checking/savings account. 401k (even if your employer doesn't match contributions), or a low- or moderate-growth mutual fund. Compound interest can do amazing things over the years.

Don't rely on others, especially government, to take care of you. Doing so only breeds dependancy. Always look for alternatives, even if it means taking a job you don't like or cutting back on stuff like cable TV that you'd prefer not to part with.

Above all, just be confident in yourself, your abilities and your potential. Never, ever give in to self-pity. Feeling powerful won't necessarily make you powerful, but feeling helpless WILL make you helpless.

A financial safety net?

most people live paycheck to paycheck.. so join the club.

I've made and effort to set aside money each month, not a lot, but enough to carry the family for about 6 months if something went south..It has taken about ten years to get to that point.. start small.. Pay off debts as you can and with the extra put it aside..

Shop at Goodwill and Flea Markets..

it doesn't mean being a hyper spontaneous, non reflective, adrenaline junkie, thrill seeking, self destructor. it means to follow your "passion" with utmost optimism, and then letting "nature take its course". you may "fail"; but at least you were true to your dreams, and your heart. implied within it is the feature that you may have to give up all of your "support systems" along with the way. it's the path of the true "sensitive" warrior. why "sensitive"? because some people can't live the "lies" required to follow any path other than their own. it's part of the individuation process. not easy, but endlessly rewarding.

Some people aren't afraid of the consequences and some are just idiots.

there are no safety nets. it is a mental creation, all things can fail. its better to have several tightropes rather than one safety net.
