My daughter paid about 10.00 for hers, it's the accessories that cost, lol!
She bought a plastic cage with fancy tubes for climbing around in, and the booger kept trying to chew her way through, so I would suggest buying a glass tank the first time around to save yourself some expense. The set up she paid for when she switched George over to glass cost her around 50.00, but that was for a free standing wheel, home, and other little toys and such.
Frankly, I agree with mental case, if you can stand to have a pet rat, they are much sweeter than hampsters!

I work at a pet store so here's a basic idea of pricing:
Your start up cost is going to be the highest. An actual hamster can cost anywhere from $3-10, but don't let cost be the deciding factor. Make sure to pick from a group that looks healthy and friendly. Cost and looks should come after that.
Then you'll need to buy the other necessities. Most cages come with a water bottle and food bowl these days, and many even with wheels, so you might be able to get that all for $20-50. Hamsters don't really need a huge cage, as they mostly sleep and eat, but make sure it has room for them to also build a large nest in a corner, and still have another for waste without it being too close to it's food or water.
You'll also need food and bedding. Many people only buy a seed-based diet but I recommend also getting lab blocks (those light brown blocks, sold in most pet stores) and using 75% blocks, 25% seed. The lab blocks make sure that they get all the nutrition the need, while the seed allows them variety which is very important for small animals. For bedding I would stay away from Pine or Ceder and use Aspen instead, if you're going to use wood. Even better than that though, is a paper based bedding such as Carefresh. It's a bit more expensive but it's free of dust and oils and looks nicer, too. Food is usually about $4-7 a bag, Carefresh $7, Aspen $5.

Hamsters come in many different kinds. There are teddy bear hamsters which I bought mine for $6.00. Then there are dwarf hamsters which cost approximately $10.00. Then you have long and short hair, which also costes around $6.00. White dwarf hamsters cost more. Male/ Female doesn't cost different though. Keep in mind. hamsters only live for 3-4 years.
