I had a dynamite job with AT&T for 14 years. Great pay, short commute, pretty decent co-workers. Then, layoff fever swept through the company and I was one of 10,000 downsized nationally in 2002. It's like, one year I'm a "Leading Legend" and two years later I'm just a seniority number.

For the LIFE of me, I haven't been able to find a decent job since! I not only earn 50% less at the company I currently work for, but it's also the cheapest company on the planet.

I am so tired of hearing people say "...oh, my layoff was the best thing that ever happened to me..." and "...oh, you just have to EMBRACE the opportunity for change...". Sometimes, things just don't work out right after a layoff.

A few weeks ago I had the best interview I had ever had. I just KNEW I had that job! Only to get a "...thanks, but no thanks" letter in the mail this week. I do my best to stay positive, but sometimes it's hard not to picture myself in 20 years living under a bridge. Dang!

A little bit of the problem with you getting laid off was because you made too much money. They got rid of you and waited the required time and hired in two or maybe three for the same amount of pay. Younger as well. It is not a good thing to be in the higher end of the pay scale. You will be the one who gets downsized.

Now if you are on the lower end of the pay scale and a poor worker and they wanted rid of you anyway and you did not like where you worked. Yes you would do better by getting laidoff. You would make as if not more from your unemployment the job and if you plaied the game right you had all your payments setup to be paid for you if you lost your job. You can come out smelling like a rose and even get 6 months of your pay when you leave plus your 401 K money. A buddie of mine opened a night club 4 years ago and he is getting very rich. So I can see how it could help some people out.

I bet you waisted your money and did not use it for your advanage.

I have tried to get laid off a every time one has came up. But no luck still working after 17 years at the same place. Good job just other things could be nicer.

Yes Yes and Yes. I worked for a company for over four years and I moved right up the ladder and had the best pay of my life and great benefits and everybody liked me at my job and in one day that was all trashed by the word liquidation.
And interviews just suck thats all their is to it. I have only had one interview in my life and it was not fun. Most of my jobs were referals and I knew I was hired before the words came out of their mouths or you look like a nice person see you Monday.
Altogether I have worked for 3 different companies that went under either when I worked for them or shortly after I quit. It is just sad. But you just have to move on and like you said be positive.

Been there, done that and now I have the tee shirt I refuse to wear. It's a tough thing to recover from and I understand your frustration. Check out this article about this subject and maybe it will help pick up your spirits.

Like you said, try to keep a positive outlook. I'm sure you know that if you want change your current situation, you have to do something different.

Hang in there. Instead of thinking about living under a bridge, figure out a way to build your own bridge.

Damn, that sounds like a bummer. Yea, I hear ya, layoffs are the shits. Well, that is if you liked your job and didn't mind your co-workers. I could understand someone saying its the best thing that ever happened, if they hated their job, and found something better. Well, I have no advice, but if your under a bridge in twenty years, make sure its the golden gate, or something fancy.
