If you can, try e-mailing them back every time they send you a spam e-mail, reminding them that you'll clutter their mailbox if they keep harassing you. I never get spam e-mails anymore. ;)

Replying to SPAM is very helpful - for the spammer. It confirms the email address is active, and they can charge more for your email address.

Most ISPs already filter SPAM at some level - billions of messages are removed by AOL, MSN, and other ISPS every year. You can purchase your own spam software if you want, but that's expensive and probably won't get it all - or worse yet, it will delete messages that are genuine.

For most people, the answer is - live with it, just as you live with the junk paper mail that comes with your regular mail. Each time I check mail, I quickly delete all the SPAM - takes just a few seconds, because it's clear these messages are not from friends or related to my business.

Just accept it as a part of life, like trash in the street, the annoying musak in elevators, or the screaming baby in the seat next to you on a transatlantic flight.

Once your email address is on a spammers list it is almost impossible to get off. Right now, your e-mail address (along with millions of others) is on a CD being sold from the back rooms of software shops from Bangladesh to Botswanna and from Norway to the Netherlands.

However there are several things that you can do to prevent even more spam.

1. Start by removing your e-mail address from your Yahoo profile,if it is on it. The spam-industry has programs that are continusously crawling the web looking for the "@" symbol which is a sure sign the the word before it and the domain name after it is an e-mail address!

2. Use a longer address. The spam industry uses programs that try sending e-mail to all known domain names. Example: a program might start trying to send out e-mails to everyone starting with aaaaa@INVALID.com and continue down to zzzzz@INVALID.com. Using a longer e-mail address will make this harder to do.

3. Never click the "Unsubscribe Link" in any e-mail. This will only confirm to the spammers that your e-mail address is indeed real and that you are reading their garbage. In fact, do not even open any e-mail from anybody you don't know or trust. Many spams are not only annoying but contain viruses of other malware. Just delete 'em without opening 'em!.
You can however click that "Unsubscribe Me" button from businesses that are well known and that you trust. Walmart... yes. Someone selling Viagra...no.

4. Open up a second e-mail account. Whenever, a website requires you to register using your e mail address, use this secondary address. There are many unscrupulous websites that will sell you address to others or bombard you with spam themselves.

5. Download a free copy of SiteAdvisor. SiteAdvisor will alert you when you search (Google, Yahoo, MSN, search only) of websites that are known to send out spam.

Treat your e-mail address just like you would your telephone number or home address....only give it out to those that you absolutely trust!

You should have atleast 2 email addresses.
1 is for personal use. Friends, Family, Coworkers....
The other is for account signups, ebay, etc. (Major spam sources)

You could even go as far as to make 1 email per incident. 1 for family, 1 for account signups, 1 for blogs, 1 for message boards, etc.

If you have 1 email address then everything gets to you and none of it is filtered.

As part of a project in high school I created 150 email addresses on Yahoo, MSN, Earthlink, etc. and used half of them to sign up for message boards and such. The ones I didn't advertise got some spam but not on the scale that the others did.
Conclusion. An unadvertised email address is harder to hit with spam then 1 that is sold from 1 source to another.

Use multiple email addresses... I reccomend having at least three

One for work/business/school related conversations

One for family and friends

One for everything else, including filling out forms online, entering contests, surveys, and anything else that asks for your email address

This way all the spam will go to your third address and it's easier to keep track of important messages

Also: NEVER reply to a spam message or hit that link that asks to be removed from their list, that just verifies you have a good email addy and you'll likely be getting MORE spam...

Spam is a part of email. Unfortunately. Most ISP providers have the option to filter it...to an extent. But it can not, and will not, ever be completely eliminated. Sure, you can waste money on Spamkiller programs. They don't work any better than what your ISP will provide. If you want it gone 100%...then get rid of email.

It's not that hard to hit the delete button. Don't ever respond. just hit delete. It won't even take 5 minutes out of your day to do so.

What email client are you using?
There are several ways to block spam
If using yahoo or gmail or hotmail, they have spam filters you can enable and set

Also some email clients such as outlook have spam filters as well.

If the spam is getting too much and uncontrollable..just change your email address and be careful how you use it.

Get a new e-mail address and quit entering contests..doing surveys..Otherwise just delete the spam.

NEVER email them back. Forward message to Federal Trade Commission: (If you email them back you are assuring them that it is a viable address.)

Then if you have yahoo, go to "options" "address guard" and if you give out email for site or purchase make an email address specifically for that site or purchase. Like "wal-mart> It explains how to do that.

turn spam guard on. u need to label first the mails that u consider spam though

In you mail.. when you click in the box to check it. click on the tab to "mark it as spam" then yahoo will know when you get mail from that person it goes in the spam folder.
