A chronograph is a watch with both timekeeping and stopwatch functions.

A chronometer is a watch tested and certified by the Swiss COSC. That costs extra, of course. Among my sports watches, my Jaeger-LeCoultre "Master Control' keeps time better than my Rolex "OP Datejust", yet the Rolex is a certified chronometer, but the Jaeger isn't. What is afoot? A clue is that the Jaeger cost $5000 more than the Rolex, and Jaeger tests its watches much more severely than the COSC does. A chronograph may be a chronometer, but it may not be. The words are different. Someone who says they are the same is wrong. A chronograph has both permanent time and a stopwatch. That means it runs constantly like a normal watch to show solar mean time with 24 hours daily. Each hour is divided into 60 minutes. Each minute is divided into 60 seconds. These divisions are even, unlike sidereal time. The stopwatch can be started and stopped at will, e.g. to time someone running 100 meters. A typical stopwatch has a button at 2:00 that starts the second hand on the stopwatch when it is pushed. Push it again to stop timing. To continue push the hand a second time. The first, third, fifth, etc. pushes start the stopwatch, and the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, etc. stop it. There is a seconds register and usually a 30 minute register. Some models have 12 hour registers too. Mechanical models are accurate to 1/5 second, except the rare foudroyante type is accurate to 1/8 sec. Quartz ones are generally accurate to 1/10 sec. and digital ones to 1/100 sec. To return all stopwatch hands to zero position, push a button at 4:00. My chronograph has a tachymeter that shows average speed over a measured distance, e.g. between mile markers on interstate highways. Some models have telemeters or pulseometers. A few even have all three scales. More complicated yet is a chronograph rattrapante that can time two racers simultaneously with a pair of second hands. I could say much more, but I may have said too much already. I hope you find this essay helpful.
