i agree with taking your mom to the local shop/expert. if she is phobic, it might be a bigger problem that will have to wait until you move out. if she just dislikes them or is scared, usually information and knowledge is the best way to cure something like that. you should also do some of your own research and find all sorts of information for her to read (and for you). you would have to be responsible and knowledgable for her to trust you to take care of it yourself so that she would not have to. answer any questions she may have. encourage her to ask questions. if she doesn't, ask her questions, like "what is it about snakes that bothers you the most?" and things like that. find out WHY she doesn't want you to have one and work it out from there. it's easier to deal with something when you know what the actual problem is. good luck.

Take your mom to a pet shop that sells snakes, have one of the people there explain that they are compleatly harmless. Maybe ask if she can touch one...maybe if she hears it from the experts(the people that work at the shop) and touches one, she will feel more comfortable around them.

If your Mom is really scared of snakes, there might not be a way to persuade her. But when you move out, you can get one right away!

search and show her many photos of beautiful lizards so that she gets off the idea that any reptile=gross. make her touch a leopard gecko (pet shop) to see it is not sleazy
show her a really young snake (at the shop?) - she may be afraid only of grown ones and the babies may look better to her - classic way of overcoming fears, she will get used to it as it grows - or you can get a lizard instead

Give her some of the positive facts about how they keep down the rodent population, are very clean, are noiseless, low-maintenance, will be kept in an aquarium with a tight-fitting screen lid (bought at the local pet store), very tame, etc. I had an emerald green tree boa for awhile...

Now, why would you still want a snake if you wrote that it terrifies your Mom? Why would you want to cause her more stress than I bet you already do?

you have to show her that you've done you're research about owning one and how docile they really are. it worked for me! some more tips are to buy a book and go to a herp shop, reptile shop (don't buy from a petsmart or petco, those snakes aren't very healthy) but if you have to be prepared to deal with a timid snake! anyways, just show your mom that you've done your homework, and you have to know everything about it. it worked for me and now i have 8 snakes. hey it works. try it!

Name the snake after your mom's middle name, bring up something she did to you that was negative, say its a birthday present, or graduation present or what ever, and tell her it wont leave your room. OR get a family member to buy it for you, as a gift. thats how i got my lizard! it was a gift from my aunt.

Tell her that even snakes are living creatures and need a loving home.
If that doesn't work, promise her she doesn't even have to see it. That you will take care of it entirely.
