Take on the tasks that nobody else wants to do.

Also, learn how to do the tasks that directly bring money into the company. To understand the economics of this, you have to understand that in any company sales people never get laid off. Neither do the people who perform the service and/or bring the product to the market.

Every company has two types of employees on the payroll- Asset based and Liability based employees. Asset based employees are the salespeople, technicians, and anyone else who directly comes into contact with the customer.

Liability based employees are those who work in administrative and management and mid-level management and supervisory positions.

Those who generate money for the company will always have their jobs. The paper pushers are the ones that get the axe first.

To keep from getting cut you have to prove that you are more of an asset (complete more work, give good ideas, make the company money) than you are a liability (the cost to have you employeed....including salary, time off, medical insurance, etc.) If you can show tha this formula is lopsided in your favor you can always keep your job. A company is looking to make a profit, so just show that you increase the bottem line.
