Everyone is not the same, we all have moods. We all have moods that ebb and flow. If you would sense your partner moods when he comes home, he will realize that you know how he feels and you will be a much greater blessing to be around. I'm sure your partner will more readily accept coming home in a better frame of mind if he knows what he will expect walking through the door. Also by showing some appreciation for him it will make his drudgery ( work) be more enjoyable.
We all want to be comfortable, unconsciously we tend to reject situations where we experience discomfort. If you want your partner to respond to you when he comes home, make sure he's comfortable first and then see how he responds to you. Besides, it you put his comfort first, he will know how you feel about him and in turn he will respond nicely to you. Good Luck!

Uhh, talk to him? Show some interest in what's going on in his life? Ask him what's bothering him, and don't accept "nothing" as an answer. He obviously bummed out about something.

Let him know that you want to help him feel better, try and get him to open up to you.

Maybe you are trying too hard. You don't say how old you both are, but there is obviously something bothering him.
