Justice seems to be one of those "universal" values that Appiah argues is shared across cultures, but it is also one that is thin - something we all agree is good until, perhaps, we se what it means in practice.

My question is Does our (and their - the "TALIBAN") commitment to justice provide a sufficient ground for "conversation" from which we might come to a better understanding of the taliban and ourselves? Remember, we execute criminals too.

I think justice and right are perceptions, not eternal truths. The Palistinians feel it's right to blow-up Israelis and the Israelis feel it's right to blow-up Palistinians. It's crazy.

Some people feel it's right to have multiple wifes, or sleep with someone out of wed-lock. Others think it's a sin and would feel very guilty.

These feelings are made-up in our minds. There is no universal truth.

So, the Taliban's society should be allowed to exist as it is. We should not interfere unless they attack us. We should also be allowed to exist. No matter what one society thinks about the other.

No. The taliban is a theocratic state forcing one groups interpretation of religion on everyone. We are a secular state where people have to the freedom to worship any religion or no religion. However, there are some on the religious right who would like to turn the US into a religious state just like the Taliban had. I don't know if that includes public whipping or not. But sure, they have some common ground they could talk about.

Humans always pride themselves to be a higher species because of their ability to think and make decisions. In my opinion, the ability to think is starting to get in the way of our lives. Because people think, and everyone think differently, quarrels and fights are started. Because people think, their school essays get discredited; students are not supposed to think, they are supposed to 'think' like people of the past who had written some books or some form of evidence and include those in the essays. Because people think, those who don't think have to conform to the ideas of the former. Because people think, they cannot come to a decision about some things and it will always be there, never-ending, never gonna be solved. Because people think. Too much in fact. Wouldn't it be good if everyone just do things without thinking too much? Go for it. On impulse. On instinct. Would that make things better? Look what has all the thinking done to us. Yes, we have the technology, the entertainment and everything else which people of the past did not have but we no longer have the simplicity in people. I'm not saying that people in the past did not think but they were smarter. They don't think so much. What's the point of thinking so much and still no conclusion and decision could be made? Doesn't that make you feel worse?

Bottomline: we think too much. Don't k. To whoever this is applicable to.

No. They are as powerful as they are now because of years of talking and understanding. They would love to lure us into thinking we are making headway with talks while they plan in the back rooms our destruction.

Absolutely. We shouldn't just allow it we should demand that our government enters into sincere dialogue with anyone we are at odds with.
