While my husband was watching TV last weekend we got into a conversation about life and death, and the need for living wills.

During the course of the conversation he told me that he never wanted to exist in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and taking fluids from a bottle.

At that point I got up, unplugged the TV and threw out all his beer.

Was this wrong?

What was the cause of your action?.. Afraid? Ask yourself, if you were in that situation, what would you want?...

I think he was being fair ... in the event you put in such a situation, you would know exactly what t do.. no doubt, you wont want to lose him, and having him even in a vegetative state is comfort for you... but, is there really a difference having him in a vegetative state and just having a memory of him?... He cant respond to you anyway, ... all you have is hope that one day he will come out of it......... Ask him... wouldnt he want to watch his childeren grow even if it meant watching them in such a state and unable to give his views about their lives?...

You looking at it as he is being selfish... but he just meant well.. dont want you to suffer or see him in such a vulnerable state.

Would you want him to live in a vegetative state? Watching day by day as he changed and become a stranger, his arms and legs curling up misshaped (atrophy) little by little. Then when you finally loose hope of him ever waking up, have to go through the court hearing of removing his feeding tube, and then watching him die.

I am with your husband in this, I too would not allow them to put a feeding tube into me, and have a living will.

I was gonna say yes but if your saying the TV and beer was what your husband says he does not want to be dependent upon, well I guess that actually makes sense

what tossing his beer, maybe, depends on how much there was.
but really no one really knows how life will be when they are old, because i have seen time and time again people in nursing homes.......nothing you say or do now will prevent becoming old and dieing, be it in a bed or running down the street.. its all what god has in store for you...... the people that care for you when you get there is what makes A difference-weather they them selves are willing to let you go(die) sooner rather than later

sounds like you need to have a few unplugged nights. it could lead to talking and more interesting conversations. you might want to let him keep the beer though

I think you were trying to prove a funny point, the thing is your husband didn't see the funny in it. Maybe you should have smirked and pointed instead of dumping his beer.

LOL! Well it may have been a waste of some good beer, but I love how you proved your point. So no, it wasn't a bad thing. It was a funny thing, but not a bad thing. :)
