No. Guns beat a karate kick any day. Can't even get close enough for the karate to do any good. And out in the real world, criminals are armed with things that reach a little farther than your arm or leg can. Plus it's illegal to beat up a suspect. So no, I doubt that karate would do a cop a whole lot of good.

The two biggest areas that cause people to fail are firearms and driving. As long as you take instruction well, you'll do fine.

Any form of self defense is useful, but I would try Jujitsu.
