Probably because "liberals" tend to be "idealistic" - at least they SEE themselves that way. Academians see themselves in one of the "helping" professions (which I think is a total crock).

Unfortunately, academians don't make anywhere near the money that their corporate counterparts make. This has them pretty bitter.

I am a PhD candidate, and I'll tell you, academians in general are out of their minds. They are the most self-rigteous, mean-spirited, sanctimonious, and bitter people I ever met. I took a needed break from my studies, and I don't miss those fruitcakes ONE BIT. In fact, I am not sure if I'll EVER finish my PhD. After spending time with those dingbats, the degree really isn't that important anymore.

Love, Jack

Having spent considerable time in both academia and the corporate world, I can tell you that the divide is not a bad as you may think. I have known some very conservative professors and some very liber al executives. I believe your assumption is generally true, but the degree is probably less than you think.

Generally this sterotype is used because of the nature of the two institutions.

Academia is seen as the more giving loving profession, where one would have to be liberal minded, willing to give not only of himself, but everything that he has.

On the other hand, those that run the Corporations are seen as calice with no regard to the people, simply the bottom line. They are not giving, but very tight with the finances. They are conservative in their handling of the company.

So to answer your question, if you look up the definition of each of these two words and ignore the popular sterotypes, you will see that they fit the mindset of those who venture into these different areas of work.

Academia is full of liberals because they all gravitated to it because of their contempt for the corporate life. Conservatives gravitate to corporations because they are pulled to the capitalist world. Now all the conservatives have the problem of where to send their kids to school and the liberals have kids that can't find high paying jobs. And yet the world still turns.

As one of those people from the field of academia - its really quite simple. The Democrats (liberals, if you prefer) believe in spending money ON education. The Republicans believe in taking money FROM education and giving it to the large corporations in the form of tax breaks.

You're stereotyping again, what the hell are you doing up at this hour? I'm used to seeing you in the daytime.

If your young and a republican you have no heart, if your old and a democrat you have no brain.
My step dad used to tell me this. I kinda like it.
