I'm from Oklahoma & here $200,000 will get you a nice house in a nice neighborhood, but in California, you can't hardly find a cruddy trailer for that much. How do people afford to live in California?

Thing is, those million dollar houses are all gonna fall in the ocean when the 'big one' hits and then us Okies will have ocean front property and our cruddy trailers will be worth that much, lol.

Well, a lot of people bought their houses years ago, it's since gone way up in value, as we sit laughing at the poor schmo who just bought the house down the street for $650 grand! But then again, we can't afford to move, and the house seems to get smaller every time we buy something...

No doubt, So. Cal. is one of the nicest places to live. Lots of good-paying jobs, one of the nicest climates in the world. Famous for movies, and high tech, with cities, mountains, forests, deserts all within 50 miles. Major earthquakes happen every 20 years, and only really affect a small part of a city at any one time.

In addition to people wanting to live here (and, on another subject, illegal immigration has a lot to do with the housing shortage) there are a lot of places that won't allow any houses to be built, even if there are people who will pay to live in them. The environmentalists demand "slow growth", which is a nice way of saying "We don't care, we just don't want to make room for you."

The policy is crippling to the poor and working-class in some areas here. Many who work in downtown Los Angeles live up to (and over!) 50 miles away. That could mean spending 4-6 hours a day just getting to and from work.

Great weather for one (minus earthquakes, mud slides, etc.). For two, lots of water front property. Third, celebrities in the area want as much money as they can for their home and sell it to some sucker that wants to live in their old home and/or wants to be their neighbor.

It is a supply and demand thing. In this case both supply is low and demand is high. The weather there is also very nice. Don't go there. Too many people, wildfires, mudslides, etc.
