I think it is foolish to continue on the petroleum pony when it appears this finite resource is becoming scarce. Dependence on oil puts our economy at risk especially when we have to get it from the middle east countries. We should be developing alternatives and our government should be doing everything possible to encourage developing it. It would be smart to tax oil even more and use those funds to get alternative fuels into the marketplace and discourage oil consumption. We've got to do something!

I agrre that we need to cut the cord with opec and big oil, but I don't think a declaration like JFK's would work now. Back then, we as entire nation had a clear goal. Reach the moon (which was a very "wow" kind of goal) before the communist U.S.S.R. We were united and driven to that goal.

Today, we are split (I know, sounds ridiculous) we all gripe about high gas prices, but not all of us are willing to make sacrifices to change the status quo. We still need to travel to get things done, and we don't want to make concessions.

So a declaration would only be met with a "Yeah!!" Then forgotten as we return to our daily routine. Eventually if the trend in gas prices continues, America will probably wake up, but only after it becomes impossible to re-adjust our personal budgets to compensate for higher gas prices.
