Winston Churchill's autobiography. That man was brilliant. I will always remember what he said to a Labor Party MP who was looking at him while he had a pee at the Parliament's bathroom: "What are you looking at? You 'Tories' can't see a big thing without wanting to nationalize it!".

The best biography I have ever read is The First American, the biography of Ben Franklin by H.W. Brandes. Truely brilliant (the subject and the work). The best autobiography I have read is Ghost of the Hardy Boys by Leslie McPharlane, the guy who originallly wrote the Hardy Boy novels. A wonderful look at the writing process as it related to churning out juvenile novels.

Kirk Douglas. My favorite part was...when he was little he asked his Mother where he came from. She told him that she looked out the window one time and saw all kinds of jewels and gold coins falling from the sky. Then she saw him. Since they were dirt poor he asked her what happened to all the jewels and gold. She told him that after she saw him, nothing else mattered. That's how precious he was. From that moment on, he felt so special. All of his life, he kept that special feeling and that's what he credits for his fame. That was a truly great Mom.

The best bio I've read is called "Cash" by Johnny Cash. It's really intimate, like Johnny Cash is telling you a story while you guys sit by the fire. His life is so fascinating.
