I got it for a 501c3 tax exempt charity organization for free, but the modem is PAINFULLY slow. I fix everything from Automotive Engine Rebuilds, to replacing breakers in the electrical Load Box, but cracking open a computer is new to me and selecting hardware is too. Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!

You should already have a modem installed in this machine, the question is how slow is slow? Dial up connections are usually slow to begin with. Are you comparing this with another computer using the same dial up connection? If you are just wanting another modem, you will have to find one that fits in a PCI Slot (internal) or you can find a Serial Modem (external).
Go to a computer place like compusa or best buy, a sales associate can help you find a good one.
This link shows you information about your machine.
I just went to compaq.com
then clicked on support
and typed in the name of the computer.

At any rate, after you select either an internal or external modem
The modem comes with specific instructions on how to install it.
Usually, the ones on the inside fit into the white slots that are on the board inside the computer. The modems that can work on the outside have a cable that connect to a port on the back on the computer. It is fairly simple to connect them, just follow the directions step by step and everything will be great.

Hope this gets you in the right direction!

I agree with Erica B, the specs say it already has a Fax/Data modem "Lucent V.92 56K modem", see web page below. It also has a built in network port.

Computer Slow

Download and then run startup.exe (FREEWARE) at:

http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......

Can't live without it and windows...

Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.

Other things to try:

1 - Disk Cleanup (removal of temp files, cookies, etc.)
2 - Defrag
3 - Registry Cleanup (CAN BE VERY RISKY!)

ALL ELSE FAILS - RELOAD YOUR O/S (WINDOWS) AND THEN REINSTALL ALL OTHER PROGRAMS YOU NEED/USE!
