As I went to uni in Sheffield, I would love to see Owls back in the Premiership, and playing Derbys against Blades again.

But I am afraid I suspect Owls will end up in mid table. The Championship is a tough league with proud teams like Wolves, Birmingham City, Leeds United, Ipswich, Preston etc. as well as Owls, and I am not convinced that Sheffield Wednesday is likely to come to the top of this pile next season.

Sheffield Wednesday was for many years one of the proudest of all football teams in a city which has claims to be the home of football. However, Wednesday has never really recovered from scandals of the 1960s, and more recently from squandering its moey on ill-advised purchases attempting to compete in Europe in the early 1990s. But they went on dreaming of themselves as a big club.

Owls are needing to claw back not only through a manager able to rebuild on minimal resources but also at director level. I remember the Lord Mayor's parade in Sheffield in the 1990s. Blades had a float with lots of enthusiastic schoolboy supporters and Owls one just with promotional people. That said a lot to me about the efficiency of the two clubs. To succeed these days, unless you have a Russian billionaire on board, a football club needs to be lean, mean and committed to selling to and involving its supporters and community. Are Owls there yet?

Sheffield Wednesday should do well under the stewardship of Sturrock. He has bought wisely over the summer.
