Keith Moon is credited with coming up with the name. When Jimmy Page was looking to form the band Moon told him that the band would sink like a Lead Zeppelin. After the band was formed Page remembered the comment and named the band Led Zeppelin.

PS: Page never left the Yardbirds, Keith Relf and James McCarty dropped out of the band in 68 and left the naming rights to Page and Dreja.

Page then tried to recruit Terry Reid who declined because of other arrangements. On a tip from Reid, Page contacted Plant who at the time was the singer for Hobbstweedle. After some persuasion Plant joined the group in August of 68, the same month Dreja dropped out of the project.

After Dreja's departure, John Paul Jones joined the group but they were still missing a drummer. Plant recommended Bonham but he was reluctant on joining due to other interests, after a few weeks Bonham was in and there was the "NEW Yardbirds".

The New Yardbirds finalized all of the Yardbirds previous booked engagements in late september of 68.

In october 68, they recorded their 1st album and that's when the group changed their name to Led Zeppelin.

Actually the origin of the band`s name goes back to just after Jimmy Page had left The Yardbirds and was about to form a new band he wanted to call Yardbirds II ,Ringo Starr of The Beatles (a popular jazz combo at the time) in his awesome way with the English language replied that it would go down like a lead balloon calling a band that.Jimmy thought lead balloon - Lead Zepellin - Led Zepellin !!!!

Lead would have ended up sounding like leed.

Not Led. Leed Zeppelin, that wouldn't have worked.

Led sounds much harder than lead

Why did Strawberry Alarm Clock call themselves that? Why did Echo and the Bunnymen call their band that? Because they could and because they felt it was more marketable at that point and time. Why is anything called what it is? Why do we give things nicknames. Because we can. It is called Freedom of Speech.
