Well if you think about it we all are from america since all the countries are in that continent (mexico, brazil, venezuela, argentina, honduras, guatemala, el salvador etc) so we could all be americanos BUT we call each one from their own coutry example Mexicano, Venezolano, Argentino etc and is Estados Unidos so Estadounidense

probably whenever someone realized that south americans are "americanos" too. American doesn't just mean from the US. so it's like "colombiano" or "mexicano" - it's specific to the country. if you're wanting an exact date, i dunno
