It is unfortunate but in this day and age people are suspicious of any acts of kindness. There are too many whackos out there that are out to do you harm. Then if they do accept your act of kindness they feel like they owe you something in return.

How about 'just because'.... maybe he was capable of doing it himself and did not need your help. He was already jacking his car up, this to me resembles someone who is capable.
Let's talk about the ones that just stand by their car........ they need help.

Perhaps you didn't have the right equipment. Or maybe he already had enough oil to grease up and lubricate the parts for the job.
