I am looking for classic or contemporary stories to make programs on public access channels. Where can I find such stories that can be used without violating the copyright law?

Is there any way to find out if it is totally safe to use a story. I mean, all books are copyrighted but some may be very old. Like, do I have to take permission to use Maupassant's works?

It's possible some of the stories you have in mind have entered the public domain. I'd do a check of the US Copyright Records, which can be done here: http://www.copyright.gov/records/

Hope that helps!
