I would not listen to the person before me (no offense), if you get a running start, you'll tend to use your shoulders to much to bring yourself around. Its like someone telling you that when you walk up a wall and do a back flip, that you are supposed to push off the wall, when in fact your supposed to let the upward motion of your body bring you around. The point, is that it is all in the legs

Practice doing a one handed cart wheel on your dominant side, once you've mastered that, practice doing a one-handed cartwheel on your non-dominant side( if you are right handed for example, when doing a cartwheel on the non-dominant side, you should be using your left hand when doing the cart wheel). Once you've master this, try it non handed. i took gymnastics and that is how they taught us to work into it

When I learned to do an aerial, first my instructor had me practice dive cartwheels, waiting as long as possible before touching the ground.

You need to push off the ground very aggressively, and really lift your chest. Also, work on getting your lead leg around as fast as possible.
