It really depends on the type of virus and what it's function is. For example, is it a virus that was meant to cause damage to only your computer? Or, is it a Trojan just waiting to get out onto the Internet?

I don't think the issue is will it still function. What you should do is install anti-virus software (such as AVG Anti-virus - it's free and works great - go here for AVG and more free anti-virus software - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_anti_virus.html). Once installed update the virus definitions. The (as someone else suggested - boot into Safe Mode (to learn how go here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/how_to_start_in_safe_mode.html) and run a full system virus scan on all drives.

Also, make sure your firewall is configured properly (you should be able to find out how using the documentation included with the software). If you, or anyone else needs a firewall, there is a whole list of free firewalls here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_firewalls.html).

Lastly, you might want to check for spyware while you are at it - and guess what - there is a whole list of free anti-spyware software here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_spyware.htmlhttp://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_spyware.html

Yes. The firewall only protects you from something trying to get in or out. If the virus is meant to stay on your computer and cause damage the firewall will have no effect. That is why you also need to have a virus program. Try the site listed below for comparison reviews of all the major brands.

Firewalls are designed to regulate incoming/outgoing internet traffic. They do not have anything to do with stopping virii. Unfortunately for you, many virii are designed to circumvent AV and firewall software. If it was already installed as you stated, do NOT log on to any sites that contain personal information which require a logon and password. If you don't have an AV program, get one. Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE before installing and running the AV program. This will ensure that most virii are not memory resident and will allow the AV program to remove the virus.

Anti-virus software and firewalls do not fully protect your system against the majority of spyware and privacy threats. Because spyware is commonly bundled with software downloads, attached to e-mails, or transmitted through networks it can appear to be legitimate software, but once installed it can be nearly impossible to detect and remove without the help of a dedicated spyware removal.

You can download the antispyware software for free computer scan with this link : - http://noadware.sitesled.com

Oh yes, although it may block information from being sent out to the internet, the virus is alive and well and may damage your system.

If the virus was there first, it will most likely still function.
