I pre-stained some oak wood planks, then made some stair treads out of them. I installed the treads, filled the nail holes with putty that accepts stain, sanded off the excess putty, and then tried to re-stain the light spots where I sanded the nail holes. Those areas will not accept stain. I cleaned the wood with mineral spirits, to no avail. Help!

Let the stain sit longer--when you first applied it, the dry wood readily took the stain. But you're now trying to get stain into wood that's partially wet, for lack of a better term. It's not soaking up the stain like it did before, but let it sit and it will penetrate.

Use a nail set and hit the holes to open them again then either try a different filler, or use the putty sticks that are already stained. Just try one hole first to see what the results are.

That's weird if you didn't apply a finish to the wood it should still accept stain. so just the nail holes won't accept stain? use the putty and add color to it and make it match your planks.

sounds strange....will not accept stain at all? or is it that its not staining as dark as the other? i would dig out he putty and use a colored filer that matches the stain u want. as far as the restain, it should at least take some color! by chance did u use a stain that had a poly in with it? like a stain and varnish all in one? that would do it!
