Are the top business schools (Wharton, Harvard, etc) expensive because they're the best, or are they the best because they're expensive (only serious students with financial backing can attend the classes)?

The MBA program I'm in is somewhat cheap ($12,000 for the entire program) and not considered anything special…But we have professors who also teach at SMU Cox which costs over $80,000. This has caused me to wonder what the students at SMU Cox were getting that we're not (since we have a lot of the same professors).

They are expensive because that is what people are willing to pay to be able to say they graduated from one of those schools. its all prestige.

prestige... for somebody. actually, it probably because business students are subsidizing all the arts students.
