I live with my mom (I support her) Her SSI doesn't cover her house payment and I pay the rest plus the bills. I am a single mom of 3 and now she wants me to help my brother in another state....What should I do? I feel it is my place to help because he IS my brother. But if I do, everything will get further behind!!

You are a good daughter for helping your mom like you do, congratulations for growing you to be such a good person. That said, IF you can afford to help your brother then I would say maybe you should, but that does not sound like it is the case, it sounds like you need to explain that you wish you could but you simply cant at this time, You and your children come first and none of you should suffer because he is struggling.

Helping your brother need not necessarily be financial help to be beneficial; it could be a matter of helping him select a better career path, exploring untapped resources he may be entitled to ( e.g. Veteran's benefits or assistance) or it could even manifest itself as a listening ear or encouraging word. No one can deny that single parenthood is hugely taxing in terms of time and financial resources, nor can they deny that this is your primary and most pressing responsibility. ( I suspect even your brother would agree). So cheerfully do what you can do, but don't ever sacrifice the best interests and security of your children for other concerns. No one can or should expect that anyway. Good luck to all of you.

Just tell your mom you can't. You would love to but you have enough on your plate now and can't financially do it. Good luck.
