look around your town to see how many branch locations are open and how many of its ATM machines are around town, making it easier for you to make a deposit or to withdraw cash.

which of these banks give you free checking and a free credit/debit card?

banks are solely in the business of making money and doing nothing else. they make money on all of the money in their (your) accounts every day, as well as on any financial products they offer, like mortgages, loans.

these days, what with all the online banking and automatic bill payment features (electronic payments to your creditors from your checking/savings account) offered by everyone else, i can't see how any bank stays in the business of making money if they don't offer you the above free, since then, you will put your money into another competitor's bank and then IT will make the money!

My vote is for Wells Fargo 100%. The customer service may not be that great but it's not bad. There checking and savings accounts are not as complicated to understand as BofA. Also with Wells Fargo they do attend to you faster whether you're waiting for a teller or banker. I've always had to wait with BofA.

B of A can be a VERY difficult bank, and one wiht lots of hidden fees. I've never been to Wells Fargo or US Bank-- but hear good things about US. Also, never heard of sterling

I have been with an online bank, Everbank, for over 2 years,
The give you an ATM card and when you use it, they'll pay up to 5 $1.50 charges a month for your cash withdrawals.
They pay 5% interest on your checking balance, and you can do all of your bill paying on line at no charge.
Which also means, no check writing no envelope stuffing and no postage (they even supply paostage paid envelopes to send in deposits.)

NEVER NEVER NEVER use U.S. Bank. They will rip you off if given the chance and call it a 'computer error.'

Bank of America has been good to me, I'd give them a try...and I've had no problems with any of my accounts there.
