This is how I would do it....."Mom, Dad...you might want to sit down, then I would say "I'm GAY".....NO, just kidding....
No really, I would ask them if we could sit down and talk about something that has been bothering me. Then I would start off with, " Mom, Dad...you know how someone finds that special person in their life that gives them meaning, gives them a sense of belonging and a sense of all is right with the world?" and of course your parents will say, "yes"...."well I found someone who has given me all of this and more....his/her name is......" They will probably say something like "his/her name?" Then you say, "Yes..._________fill in the name, he/she really makes me very happy and we have been seeing each other for x amount of time." "I'm gay/lesbian".
By now, your parents will be going through a plathora of emotions and they may say things that they really don't mean; you have to give them their space......don't take it personally...just step back and look at it from their prespective and you might want to make your exit about right now. Tell them that "you know that this may have come as a shock to them and that you love them very much.....and that you just wanted to be honest with them and felt that they should know."
Give them some space to soak it all in and maybe in time, you might want to bring your significant other to meet them....remember, they are old school and it might be a spell before they can come to terms with this news. Time and space heals all wounds......Call them in a few days just to tell them that you love them and that you are thinking of them.

Just be honest and let the chips fall as they may. It will take adjustment, but if they love you they will accept you no matter what.
