What a bunch of knuckleheads!!! Leaving the unit off for a period of time after installation is a precaution to allow refrigerant oil to resettle into the compressor so the oil doesn't damage the VALVES in the compressor upon initial start-up. The dealer assumes you will have jostled the unit while installing it.

Yes, it would be wise to leave it sitting for 40mins to 1hr if it were in any other position than normal. The same applies to any other appliances with a compressor such as a refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier, etc. Pancakes explained why in an earlier answer namely the oil and freon have an opportunity to settle where it needs to be.

The reason is the oil in the compressor can leak in to the lines, letting it sit flat for 1 hour allow the oil to return to the compressor to prevent damage!

If you jossled it around or turned it on it's side, you need to let the freon and oil settle back down to the bottom before compressing it. If you didn't, there's no need to wait.

Its a good idea. This lets all the liquid coolant settle. otherwise the first few times you run it it won't work properly until it sits long enough for the coolant to settle.
