For recent stuff, try to find the William Orbit mix of Electrical Storm. It's on the Best of cd that's 1990-2000, even though it was released between 2000 and that cd.
Sounds like, for the most part, you'd like the stuff they did before they experimented with more electronic sound. Try the album War, and commit to listening to it all the way through at least three times... if that pays off, get October and Boy.
If you're just looking for some songs like Vertigo, try the singles off of Achtung Baby, like Mysterious Ways and The Fly. Get "God Part II" from the Rattle and Hum album, and "Staring at the Sun" from Pop. See if you can also find the Junk Day mix of "Dirty Day". Those last three could change your life.
If you like some of the spacey songs from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, check out the whole Joshua Tree album. If you want to hear some awesome experiments with sound with some thrilling results, Unforgettable Fire and Pop are for you. Get "Your Blue Room", just so you know what I'm talking about, and "Bad", "A Sort of Homecoming", and "Wire" from Unforgettable Fire. "Your Blue Room" was on a best of cd, even though technically it wasn't recorded by U2, but by a band called The Passengers, who was just the four members of U2 plus Brian Eno.
There's a lot out there if you're willing. The rewards are high.

To me you're an anomaly. How could anyone consider U2 entertainment. Is there anything more boring than a U2 song? God!
