Ooo, what a tough question. Well the truth is your applying for it because it's probably more money, but you can't say that. I'd say this:

"I eager to advance my career and to obtain a challenge. I have been at my current position for ?? and I feel that am ready to take on new responsiblities."

Good luck!

The inanity of some application questions should give you a clue as to what upper management is like; you can either be honest (I want more money), or phony (I am looking forward to new and exciting career challenges (which means: I want more money)

If you want to give a quasi honest answer that is not baldly about cash, try to find an aspect of the job you are applying for that interests you or you have had interest in before; then you can say, honestly, that the job would offer you a chance to learn and be part of whatever aspect you mention. This is not easy for some jobs, like proctology or goldfish neutering, but it'll work fine on the dweebs from HR...good luck.

I applied for this job since it matches my skills and abilities, my previous experience and positions I filled successfully. I feel that this position will enable me to demonstrate my abilities and skills and make a contribution in an area I have studied in and see my future career in.

You would like to continue growing with your company and apply the skills you have to the new position while gaining new skills. Something along those lines.

I don't feel that my full abilities are being utiltized in my current position. I'm up to the challenge of management, and would like an opportunity to prove myself.

Tell them because you love your job and you want to get more involved and learn more about the company as well as help serve the clients better.
