If you want it for the very basics of internet, internet games, and windows, you can get a computer for around 250-350 at circuit city. They actually had decent deals.
If you play hardcore games, like WoW, or Halflife, the better bet is to go to a local computer builder, tell him the specifications you want (like an amazing video card) and have him build a personalized computer.

compaq and radio shack are proprietary companies. that means when the computer quits on you you can only get the parts from them and their prices are very high.
no one can tell you which one to get without knowing what you plan to use it for. gamers want a really fast one with great sound board and extreme graphics board. but web surfers can get by on just about any computer.

you should go on circuit city .com and check out what they have or even better hp.com thy have really good deals sometimes. hps are good computers i just got one and that's what i was recommended.Toshibas too. as for the memory and speed and all that I'm not much help but i know it really depends on the type of games you wanna play. plus it's always good to have more memory and speed anyway

just buy the cheapest thing you can get but make sure it has 4 gigs of ram and like 500 gigs of hd space and 2 geforce 7950 and stuff like that...
