Historically, it is President John Tyler. He became the first President to not be elected President. He was the vice-President of the President Harrison who died 30 days into office. When he became President, he ended up vetoing just about every bill from his own party, the Whigs. Eventually he was expelled by the whigs and thus became a President without a party. So not only did his opponents hated him, but now all those who once supported him hate him. I'm sure that if polls were around then, he would probably have a 2 percent approval rating through his whole term, and that is being generous.

Do you mean the most hated or the most feared? I am sure you are referring to President Bush as the most hated president in American History, but you are wrong. Even though Bush's poll numbers are in the 30s, you would have to understand how polls are taken, by whom they are taken, and to whom they are given. The art of polling is not by far a reliable science by which you should make decisions.

There have been plenty of presidents, in fact, nearly every single one, that have been plenty hated by a great number of Americans. Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Sr. The founding fathers didn't have it much better, as there has always been a dissenting voice of the people.

There has always been at least two diametically opposed political parties in this country, and that only naturally brings division between the people, and against our current president, regardless of who he is.

You're pretty transparent in your feelings. Not necessarily a bad thing, but you should do your research on American history before you start making such broad sweeping assumptions.

who cares about the most hated? I think it's more imporant to think in terms of who was the worst.
Nixon is probably the most hated... people will say Bush now, but that's just a knee-jerk reaction. 20 years from now, they won't hate him as much.
Carter is clearly the worst president of the last century. I don't have much knowledge of Presidential failure prior to that.
