When talking to people from other countries, I say I'm from the States. If I say I'm American, in say, Mexico, they're like, yeah, me too. I guess we call ourselves Americans because we thought of the name United States *of America* first--none of the other countries in the Americas have America in the name of their country.

English people are called English, or sometimes Anglo-Saxons (like English speakers are sometimes called "Anglos" by Hispanic people) and people from Scotland are called Scots. Not Scotch. And Statians looks like it would be pronounced like "Stations." And we're not from United Sta-sha.

Mexico's official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos or "Mexican United States".
Before you say anything, the names of both countries were concieved almost at the same time...
So, people from Mexico are mexicans and people from the States... have no identity? Mexico comes from a heritage background, named after the Mexica people, settled here before the Spaniards came.
It is really arrogant to call someone from the United States "american", and so are all the supposed explanations of why.

Why weren't the Athenians called United City-Statians? Who knows, I'm guessing because one word is easier then two.

Silly...but a good question.

In the name USA, the word "America" is in reference to where the states are located...the continent. Mexico and Canada are also on the continent of America, so just as we call people from Asia "Asians", one could also call Canadians "Americans".

My brain hurts.

Because we thought of it before the Canadians and the Mexicans. A better question would be, why isn't America called Columbia, after Christopher Columbus, instead of the first name of the guy who first mapped America? And why the first name?

Hail, hail, Vespucciland!

Excellent question and the answer is I don't know. I do know that people from Canada, Mexico and other countries on the American continents say they are Americans also.
