I sometimes wish we didn't have them.
Everywhere I look there's someone with their hand on their ear. I even see children walking around at the store or on the sidewalk talking on them.
A lot of parents buy these things for their kids "just in case there is an emergency".
It really must be a society in code red and I'm surprised the national guard isn't on every block because it looks like these people are on emergency status 24/7.
I don't take my cellphone with me all the time. I'm glad I didn't get to drawn into it. I enjoy the silence that comes by being cell phone free.
Did you know some birds don't use their natural chirping patterns anymore? They have heard and learned the ring tones of some phones and are instead using those artificial sounds to chirp.
It makes me wonder, what will happen when suddenly there is an emergency so big that all electronic communications become useless?

I have to say that having a cellphone is like an addiction. It's like forgetting your cigarettes if you're a smoker. I have gone back to my house if I have forgotten it. If I did without my cell phone for an entire day, I would be lost. More than an addiction, I feel it is a necessity. My kids call me when they arrive from school, the school can contact me at any time if there is an emergency, and if I am traveling to a place that I am unfamiliar with, I don't have to get out of my car to use a pay phone that may or may not work.
Hurray for cell phones, I say!

I never use mine, unless it's an emergency. Stuck in a jam on the freeway, or something similar.
Most of the week it's turned off. At home I have an anwering machine as most people these days have. So at worse, they will only have to wait a few hours, for me to get back to them.
Nothing is that important really. I'd turn it on, if a family member was sick, and might need help. But for my usual day to day, living, forget it.
I finally had to buy a fixed rate one, although, I didn't really want to, as I'd lived over forty years with out it, quiet well. But that's life these days.

When I still had my cellphone I was addicted to it. I never went ANYWHERE without it. I took it with me when I went to the bathroom or to take a shower. I felt out of place without it and yes, I would turn around and go back home if I forgot it. It was like a lifeline that I couldn't function without. But I don't have one anymore because I don't have a job anymore and can't afford one. It took time to get used to not having one, but i survived. I'd really love to get another one though. : (

Honestly, I miss the days when we didn't have to be accessible ALL THE TIME. I hate when I'm doing something and I get text messages about stupid stuff, then when I turn my phone off people feel like they have to leave a message every 2 minutes. Also I work in customer service, and find it really rude when people are on their phones while I'm taking care of them. There's a time and a place.

For me I can definitely go a day without it because I remember what it was like not to have one and go through life just fine. Unless there was a life threatening emergency I don't really use my cell phone. Some conversations are not that important. I can shoot the sh.. at home

I've gone all 30 years of my life without an electronic leash....umm, I mean..."cell phone".
I think they are annoying and most of their owners are obnoxious when using them. So to answer your question: Yes, I live quite happily without a cell phone and no, I don't think they improve people's lives, generally speaking (sure, there are exceptions). Furthermore, many sociologists have claimed that cell phones have diminished people's social skills and sense of etiquette. I'd have to agree...
P.S. The answer below mine by BlueSummer is exactly what I'm referring too. Good answer, Blue.

I lived 12 years of the cell phone revolution without one, and now that I have one, I keep putting in on silent. I hate phones altogether.

I don't need my cell phone all the time, I'm one of the rare ones that only has it for an emergency ... so if I didn't have it everyday it wouldn't matter, it's dead half the time anyway ...
