Be sure you have the proper mixture of water / antifreeze in the radiator. The radiator fan could not be running when you turn on the a/c, Most cars now have the relays set that when the a/c is turned on, the electric fan behind the radiator comes on and continues to run the whole time the a/c is on. I dont think it would be your thermostat, but I wont rule it out either.

What kind of car is it? some cars have a second fan on the radiator that would turn on when the AC is turned on for added cooling, perhaps the cooling fan isn't running?

it might b u'r thermostat....turn on the car for a little while with the A.C, and listen, if u don't here a noise like a fan running, than it might not b working, they r not very expensive, and are very easy to change.....hope this helps. u should ask u'r autoparts store rep. just in case. good luck.
