Be very wary of any answer you get to this question.

Democrats (liberals)- raise taxes to spend on services (healthcare, education, police).

Republicans (conservatives)- don't raise taxes and believe that individuals can decide what to spend their money on.

This is really, really simplified (and doesn't include anything about foreign affairs), but it's a start...

And also be aware that these terms mean different things in the US than they do in the rest of the World. American politics are very different compared to other democracies.

It's worth noting that in the traditional, 'rest of the world' sense, George Bush is not a conservative. A (non-American) conservative would be very reluctant borrow money to spend on wars (this isn't making a judgement about Iraq, by the way).

Conservatives in almost every other country care more about financial responsibility than social issues (e.g abortion, stem cell research). European conservatives, like the British Conservative Party and the German Christian Democrats try to distance themselves from the current Republican Party leadership.

Governor Arnie is a good example of what the rest of the world thinks of as a conservative.

A Liberal and a Democrat are pretty much the same thing. They believe in freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, the rule of law, free exchange of ideas, a transparent government where the rights of minorities are protected and also a seperation of church and state. A conservative and a republican? Now and days it's the same thing. The GOP or the Government of the People believe in smaller governments, they trust the market to optimize out comes rather then gov't mandates oppose universal health care and rather lean on company insurance plans. However they do support Medicare and Medicad for people over 65 or low income families. The majority of the party is Christian. They believe in state controled abortion, but they are for the death penality. Hope that helps

Liberal means they are more susesable of change, meaning it can go almost either way, or is open to new ideas based on the changing envrioment, like Liberal Democratics, typically agree to prochoice, while conservative republicans choose to go for prolife.

Liberal tends to go towards Stem cell research, while Conservative republicans, are against stem cell research. Generally, each individual has their own beliefs, but it's a general belief system. Basically consertatives dislike change, they prefer the tradtional views, are often clingy to religion.
Liberals have liberal ideas, and are open to opinion, and inventions.

Democrats, believe in social eqaulity, and power of the people.

While republicans, believe the people have rights to vote for people who will decide for them based on the characteristics the representative has.

Liberal is just another way to say Democrat.

Conservative is just another way to say Republican.

They are just descriptive words of the typical beliefs of each...usually Democrats are more liberal and giving, where Republicans are more conservative and witholding.

Different assignments to sucker people who are not born in the ruling class to believe in ideologies that those who preach them the most practice the least. Politics is a food fight at a prep school; the political parties and the whole spectrum from far left to far right are just for show--the real power is behind the scenes and is exercised by selfish idiots.

That's a great question. Everyone should agree to stop using those inflammatory shorthand labels, and be forced to explain what each of them mean, whenever they want to use them. They mean different things to different people.
