I've had it done twice. The first time was the worst cuz I didn't know what to expect.
I'm terrified of needles, and for all procedures that involve them, I tell whoever is doing the procedure that I am going to close my eyes and that I do not want to see what is going on, and I especially do not want to see the needle that they are going to use.
Always remember, however scared you are, and how silly you think you are being, the doctor has undoubtedly dealt with someone ten times worse than you are.
In fact, that's a good topic of conversation to have with your doctor while she is performing the amnio. I asked my doctor to tell me stories of patients who were worse than me, and she told me about a gal who actually fainted in the middle of it, and also of a gal who sat straight up on the table in the middle of the procedure and tried to run away, while the needle was still in her!
The actual amnio takes less than a minute. You'll do fine. If I can do it, ANYONE can do it.

I refused, for the main reason, as a christian i beleive God blesses us, and wont challenge us with things we can handle. I am 31, and 21 weeks pregnant, and i refused the last two times it was offered. I didnt want to spend the rest of my pregnancy in fear of MAYBE having a "downs" child. If the amnio came out possitive, i still would not abort, so i refused it! Having said that, i have no judgement against woman that do have amnios, or choices made after the amnio.

Amniocentesis can give good information on the baby. For parents whose babies are at risk it can offer peace of mind, or information to better plan for baby's special needs. There are risks involved in the procedure, though, so it's good to discuss this with your healthcare provider.
Best wishes!

The amniocentesis procedure is relatively quick and relatively painless. A sample of the amniotic fluid is drawn, and tested for a variety of issues with your developing child - most parents just want to determine the sex of the baby.

My sister has done it three times. I don't think it's super unpleasant, and it gives you peace of mind. She was over 35 for her three kids. Three beautiful healthy girls. Good luck to you!
