The biggest decision is will you keep the baby if there is a genetic problem, if you would don't have the amnio, to much of a risk. If you are unsure have the amnio, if there is nothing wrong you dont have a decision to make. Do whats right for you. My test came back 1 in 32, I was only 26 at the time, I had the amnio, I needed to know, I have 2 other young children to consider. My amnio came back clear and I had a beautiful little girl who is now 2. When having the amnio I had a local anasthetic in my stomach, the only bit that hurt was when the needle went into my uterus, its uncomfortable (not as bad a childbirth). I made sure I rested for longer then they suggested too. Good luck and I hope its all clear!

The blood test you took does not mean that your baby has Down's, just that he or she is at a somewhat higher risk. This test is wrong 90% of the time and only about 10% of women with abnormal results have babies with birth defects.

If the test was accurate, the ultrasound tech should have seen abnormalities in the ultrasound called 'soft markers' that are typically small cysts in the brain or some distinct problem with one or more major organ (such as the kidney, liver or even the muscles). If they said the ultrasound looked fine, then it is even less likely that your baby will have Down's.

The amnio has risks including miscarriage and uterine infection. Considering the low risk of your baby having Down's based on the information you have provided, if I were you I wouldn't do it. If they don't find any 'soft markers' in the second ultrasound, then the original blood test was most likely a false positive. I would only consider the amnio if 'soft markers' were found in the second ultrasound and even then, only if I intended to do something about it.

With such a low risk that your baby has Down's and without any 'soft markers' in your next ultrasound, I would recommend you study up on Down's rather than get an amnio. That way, you will be prepared for what you face if the test was accurate despite the likelyhood that it is not but you don't put the baby or yourself at risk from the invasive procedure.

I wish you the very best. Please start with these sources to learn more about the test you already took (the multiple marker screening) and the amnio:

These doctors scare everyone to death and then it all turns out fine. If size of head and body is fine I would not worry. They told my cousin who was 42 they thought the baby had downs and a heart problem and they were wrong on both counts. If you are really worried and think it will ruin the rest of the pregnancy have the amnio. I didn't get it and it was recommended because I was freaked out about a miscarriage. The odds are so small, but you know how we moms worry.

I had the opportunity to do it, but didn't because the risk percentage was more than the percent chance of something actually being wrong. I would say talk to a midwife or a doula. They are "real people" who understand. Where are you from? I had my baby in Washington cause midwives are legal and birth center births are paid for by the state. I had a water birth in a birth tub. It was amazing. And my baby was fine. They said my baby was small when I did my ultrasound and then my midwife said that was wrong. You really need to talk to a more "down to Earth" professional. I don't trust doctors. E-mail me and tell me where you are from and how far a long you are. And don't worry too much.

My aunt had a down baby last Oct. She had her blood test come back 1 in 200 and she would not have anymore test done because she said she was to far along. The baby was smaller (4 pounds 15 oz ) for a full term baby but she loves Hollie and she would not had done it any other way. Those babies are special. If you don't want it then just give it away when its born. But I'm sure you would not regret having it.Good luck !!!

Can you handle raising a child with problems. I really hope so because every body takes the chance of having a birth defect. These children may be a bit more work but they are sooo worth the effort. I had a cousin with down's and he was such a happy boy. I have 2 boys myself and trying for another (34) I pray to have a healthy baby but will love whatever God sends me

Many times the Dr's want to test you to be absolutely sure that the baby is okay so they use all types of testing, and yes it is scary. Down screening is something that they offer as a preventative measure. So if your child has down syndrome which is something we all face when we are pregnant how do you think you are going to manage? My first sibling had downs and my mother was perfectly healthy. No one in our entire family on both sides has it. But one thing my mother does tell me is that she loved that little boy so much because he was the greatest love that she could ever imagine., he lived to be 4 and he died because of complications of heart surgery back in the late 60's, if it had been today he would have lived to be 100. I myself take care of a little girl who has downs and just to let you know, they are Gods gifts. Good luck and GOD BLESS!

if you will keep the baby no matter what ( or give it up if it has downs) then why put yourself and your baby through an amnio?

If you don't think you could raise a downs baby (or give birth to one and not give it up) go for the test

I had the same thing happen to me that doctor told me because of my age there was a good chance there would be something wrong with my baby. The test came back and they said I should have the Amino. I talked To my Sister who is a RN on OB. She advised me not to. The doctor was even saying because I was AGE 37 year old I should think about aborting my child. I can tell you now...I'M glad I didn't listen to Him AND SO IS MY 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WHO IS PERFECTLY NORMAL. I SENT A PICTURE TO THE DOCTOR WITH A CAPTION. 'WHY WOULD I ABORT HER?'

I refused that test, because of that exact reason. They have so many false positives, and that is a fact. Won't you love the baby regardless if it has Down's? I think so, and if you didn't then give it up for adoption. Don't jump to any conclusions yet, because there is a huge possiblity that your baby is fine. There are so many people who get that test done and then find their baby to be completely normal. Please don't give up, I think your baby will be fine.
