Try to make b the same base as a,

as in,

2^x = 4

make 4= 2^2

so that x=2.

Use a calculator to change the base of any number to one that you desire, and it will tell you what power will yield 'B' in the equation...

you need to take the log of both sides to move the x from the exponent...so it would be x log(a)=log(b)

Use logrithms as follows:

Ln( a^x) = x*Ln(a)

so Ln( a^x) = Ln(b)
x Ln(a) = Ln(b)
so x = Ln(b)/Ln(a)
