Stop thinking of humanity collectively and focus on the individuals. Do not ask yourself if humanity is worth saving. Ask yourself if you know one person who is worth saving. Resolve to continue for the sake of that one person, and every other individual who inspires you. Don't think of such large abstractions as humanity and society. Make your quest personal. Think about the people.

I don't mean to sound too critical but it sounds like you listen to the media a little too much. I think that our future and fate is in our own hands. You need to look for the good in things and the dismal atmosphere will start disolving. I agree with one of the other answers that you may try focusing on individuals instead of society as a whole.

Actually, societies have been bettered throughout history, but we usually don't recognise the advaces because we llive with them.
Slavery was ended, the minimum wage instituted, the five day week created, the women's movement, the Marshall plan, the computer revolution, and the Civil Rights movement just to name a few.
All of these came about by a few brave people refusing to take the norm.

I believe there is an inner directive in each of us to evolve to a higher level of consciousness. Unfortunately there is also the other side of the spectrum, those in a lower form of consciousness closer to the primate ape.
It does not sound as if you can 'help' yourself but to add yourself upon the list of those that will evolve towards higher enlightenment. Remember patience for those that 'cannot understand' and never believe that your thoughts are meaningless. Thought is energy, energy is matter and matter cannot be destroyed, only changed. Your positive emanations 'do' help others. You will have to constantly be changing (depending upon the circumstances) as to 'how' you can aid and assist, you should also keep a journal of your own thoughts so you can keep challenging yourself to higher growth. The better humans we make ourselves, the better we reflect change in others.
