Hyper Text Markup Language. A makup language is basically a type of shorthand for describing a page of text or in the case of the internet even more than text. Hyper-Text refers to the ability to navigate between pages by hyper-text links. HTML is the language that describes what webpages look like. For instance if a text is enclosed in text text text then your web browser knows to show that text in bold. And it gets more complicated with tables, frames, pictures, and beyond. Today, webpages have gotten more complicated, but HTML is still the backbone of each page.
