If you REALLY want to get DEEP here....It's # 5. Many theoretical physics still believe in the Big Bang/Big Crunch theory. (Despite recent evidence pointing towards expansion...30% still think it will collapse, as do I.) To me...this makes the most sense because it all balances out in the end. Equilibrium is achieved. Based on all of that, we are only now in one of many expansion phases of an ongoing cycle. The entire Universe literally turns itself inside out each time it blows up in another Big Bang. Picture everything in the universe getting compressed into a point where it can not get any smaller. It would push itself into another dimension and actually turn inside out transferring all of the matter and energy outwards again into another Big Bang. I have studied science and physics a lot and this is the theory that Logically makes the most sense, IF you fully understand it. Your question was actually very profound. I hope you find my answer equally thought provoking. (As well as the correct one.)

in reference to what ?

What would you compare this position to? Position relies on some sort of reference point. In our experience, all reference points are inside the universe. Self-reference generates no answer for this.

Since we cannot pick a reference point outside the universe, we cannot come up with an answer.

a million. All bright navigational stars do no longer belong to varied galaxies. they only belong to a minimum of one galaxy - ours. surely, all the celebrities which you will locate with the bare eye are in an rather small region of our galaxy. those stars are shifting relative to a minimum of one yet another - we are able to music the action over many years and centuries, even with the undeniable fact that that's extraordinarily insignificant over the span of a single year. 2. Our galaxy is substantial. in case you're taking the region wherein we are able to work out guy or woman stars and multiply it via one hundred, you would be able to get contained domestically of the dimensions of our galaxy. all the celebrities in our galaxy are additionally shifting relative to a minimum of one yet another. case in point, it takes 225 million years or so for the sunlight to make a single orbit around the galactic middle. of course, you does no longer be conscious that form of action from one evening to the subsequent. the enlargement of the universe on an entire is insignificant on the dimensions of our galaxy. 3. you may start to work out the effects of the enlargement once you start to work out different galaxies - yet no longer the interior of reach ones. the closest galaxies, like M31, are actually not in all probability receding from us extremely (surely, M31 is coming near) because of the fact they're nonetheless too on the edge human beings to work out the effects of the enlargement. yet they're lots too far away to make certain guy or woman stars. 4. via the time you get out to the galaxies that are merely seen in novice scopes (say, 60 million gentle years away), you start to be conscious that each and everything is receding in a uniform style. merely about all of those gadgets are shifting far flung from us. 5. The farther out you look, the swifter those gadgets are receding. this is like dots on the exterior of a balloon it quite is increasing. The farther aside the dots are initially, the swifter they'll recede from one yet another. via the time you get to the sting of the observable universe, they're all flying far flung from us at extra effective than 0.5 the fee of sunshine relative to us.

First of all, maybe all of the above or maybe none of the above. One of these days someone will figure it out. But this is in reference to what?

It will take decades to figure this one out and I truly believe that we will not be around to find out the answer to your question.

Up and down is relative to gravity. The universe is not in any particular orientation, it is the position that all things are relative to.

i dont think u can really classify its position because the universe contains all the space there is and the position in space the universe in cant be determined because the universe IS all the space
