Bill France Sr. started it way back, when the only racing was expensive european stuff. He thought it would be marketable if the average joe could race the same kind of car that he drove every day. How times have changed. The first track was a stretch of highway combined with a stretch of Daytona Beach, the first couple of seasons were run at Daytona , Atlanta, and Darlington. Daytona and Atlanta were later rebuilt, Darlington never was, making it the circuit's oldest track. The reason the track is so hard to drive is because the technology was obviously not as good in those times. It also is pinched off on one end because a farmer refused to sell part of his property for the track. Whiskey runners were drawn to the circuit to prove their reputation, and because during, and certainly after prohibition it was a more reliable income.

I'm not sure of the year but NASCAR got it's start from guys years ago running moonshine. I guess they would brag about how fast their car was and race to see who's car was the fastest.
Then they actually built race tracks and the first sanctioned race was at Daytona Beach actually running on the sand. And the rest as they say is history

nascar.com will tell you everything you need to know. Of course it used to be called the Grand Nationals, and Winston Cup, but I'm not aware of any other titles its gone by. Good luck.
