NASCAR has its roots in the "moonshiner" trade. There were many people, most in the south, that distilled hard liquour illegally. To transport their contraband to the buyers they used cars that were modified to carry concealed tanks of booze. In order to outrun the cops and the revenuers they hopped up the engines and modified suspensions.

It followed that sooner or later "braggin' rights" went to the driver that could successfully outrun the law. Subsequently the owner/drivers began to compete against each other to settle the question of the fastest car.

Eventually this led to organized races and ultimately created the first race at Daytona Beach, Florida. Jalopys with modified engines competed, on the beach no less, for the first race a Daytona. Eventually this led to the founding of the National Association of Stock Car Racing.

..........and things just kinda snowballed from there.
