sure, with a roommate. although rent is NOT 1,500, you can find 1-bdrm for about 950 on average, studio's for 750. Hhaving a roommate(s) can cut your rent in half. I used to waitress for years, and survived in LB, you should be fine. Tons of college student survive, you'll be great. Besides, LB is the king of dive bars, and drinks are about 3 bucks cheaper than in LA.

Although I have never lived there (I live 25 miles away), I have relatives that live there. The interior areas of Long Beach are the high crime/gang/poverty areas. I wouldn't live there even if somebody paid me $2,000/month. My cousin got shot at 4 times in 3 years, before deciding to move out.

I would either find a roommate that has a house/apartment in coastal parts of Long Beach or get a place of my own there... But if you're making 30k/year, I would definitely go with a roommate to save your money.

Some parts of Long Beach are very expensive, but there are some more affordable areas. That amount might work for a one person household. This is a good place to start:

If you already live in CA, you need roommates which you probably have. If you are going to move to Ca, be it Long Beach or where ever, you will be very hard pressed to live on $30K /year.

I don't think there is anywhere in California where you can live nicely for 30K a year. Maybe with two incomes and renting, you might be able to afford a nice car.

Long Beach is a pricey city and you'd have a very difficult time making ends meet.

No. But, if you are frugal enough, then it should be. California has a very high cost of living. I used to live in northern California but moved to the northwest valley of Phoenix, AZ area.

No place is nice on $30K. Except maybe third world countries... there you could be like a regent or nobility with that kind of wealth.
