I have a 2 month old baby, it's our first. She is breastfed exclusively and is growing just fine, but she has a lot of gas ALL the time. My poor baby starts sleeping and you can see her bending and stretching because of the colic, and you can also hear her tummy sounds everytime it happens, so she wakes up very easily and never has a good straight sleep. I know she is not supposed to sleep a lot at this stage, but I would love if she could sleep 2 straight hours in between feedings with less colic. She doesn't last too much inside her crib before she is awaken by the pain and this puts a lot of stress in my wife. We've tried Mylicon and don't feel it helps much or probably not at all. Has anyone tried anything else that helps with the gas? Thanks.

Mylicon drops actually made my son's colic WORSE! I stopped them very fast!! Gripe Water works wonders!!

Also, my son (now 2..it does get better!!!) has always slept on his tummy...from the time he was in the hospital and still now, you will find him on his belly. The pressure of being on his tummy made him feel a lot better!! He didn't "wiggle" so much, I would put him in the middle of my bed and I would find him by teh pillows...and this was at days old! He hurt so badly that he would wiggle everywhere!

A warm tub helped him immensely! I would stick him in the sink when I thought that he was in pain...

Sometimes, giving up dairy if breastfeeding helps. I gave up all dairy for 17 months, and I noticed a big enough difference within the first week to keep me from eating it!! My son just couldn't tolerate the dairy...

These are just a few ideas.. I also kept my son in bed with me. He slept a lot better there and I could just roll over and nurse him..plus the warmth of your bodies will help him!

Go and visit your local Whole Foods Store. The people there are WONDERFUL and will give you lots of ideas!!!

Hang in there...It really does get better..

Both of my little ones were gassy little babies (I blame it on my husband's gene pool, LOL - just kidding). Here's some non-medicine ways to deal with gas that have worked for me. When you're feeding him, make sure to burp him well every 5 - 10 minutes. When he's farty, lay him on his back. Gently grab his legs just below his knees and push them into his tummy. You'll have to do this several times before you get any results. Sometimes it works best to push both legs into the tummy, and sometimes it works better to alternate. But the key is to be gentle but firm. Another thing I've done is again lay baby on his back. I'd lay my hand so that the palm covers the tummy and then rotate it in a clockwise motion. I don't know how much it actually relieved the gas, but it always calmed them down. There's an actual baby massage techique for relieving gas that I've tried to find the link to but I can't find. If you have the time and are interested, you might do a websearch for it. Try "baby massage for gas" or "baby massage for colic" and see what you get. Sorry - I know it's out there, but I'm due somewhere else soon. If I can find it later, I'll edit my post and add the link. Take care of yourself. You'll be in for the long haul - this phase will pass, but it may last for as long as 6 months (I know, yikes. I've been through it). See if you can get some support from hubby, and get some rest. Edit: BTW -Just in case it came across wrong, I'm not against using mylicon or other medicines - I used mylicon with both my kids. I just wanted to let you know of other things you can do. I do recommend calling your doc and making sure that baby is old enough first.

Mylicon is the very best remedy we ever tried. Keep in mind that 'colic' is NOT a real condition. It is a catch phrase to describe the symptoms of gas and discomfort most babies have. Your baby may be having an adverse reaction to mothers milk (?) I would speak to your Dr. as 'colic' symtoms usually don't last for more than 6-7 weeks.

Lots of great advice already to your question, but here's my 2-cents:

My pediatrician advised giving my son the Mylicon (or a generic version containing the same ingredient: Simethicone) before each feeding. I tried to give it to him about 15 minutes beforehand so it had time to ease his tummy before feeding. He still has occasional issues, but with tummy rubbing and raising his legs up, that usually does the trick.

Also, my friend, an Emergency Room doctor, claims you can't overdose with Mylicon - so occasionally I give several doses in an hour, and this seemed to help as well.

Hang in there and good luck!

Ok I have a 10 month old baby and when he was smaller he had colic really bad. The nurse at the health unit told me to use Dee Wee's at night the reason you use it at night is because it has alcohol in it. It will not hurt your baby, you give her just a little bit. During the day with the colic use the gas medicine. The Dee Wee's will help your baby sleep. It works great.

If your baby is exclusively breast feed she may not take a bottle, my daughter was exclusively breast feed for 8 weeks and she had tons of colic so my sympathy goes out to you. What my mother told me to try and I did. I made some manzanilla tea (boiled it)which is chamomile with about 1/2 teaspoon for sweetness make sure that it is lukewarm test yourself before giving to baby. Now do this in a 4oz bottle. It worked for my screaming baby but you have to be patient. I know that there is nothing worse than a colicky baby. Make sure that your wife is not eating food that would pass on gas, like beans, broccoli, sometimes even milk products like milk and cheese will do it. You live and learn, but this shall pass and you won't even remember it.

I have two kids that I breastfed and they were very sensitive to the foods I ate. When I drank milk, they had horrible colic. I drank gallons of camomille tea and also fennel tea and it transfered to them through my milk and helped them. Also, sometimes I would spoon feed them a little tea with an eye dropper, just a tablespoon or so.
My daughter was the worst and I would fill up the kitchen sink with warm water and hold her in the water to relax her tummy muscles. This was something she really thought was relaxing and fun too.

I dont know what kind of medicine america has, but I used OVOL and it worked well on my very colicky baby-also, and what i would think to be the biggest help-get mom to identify what is making so gassy. Mom could very possibly be eating something that is making her tummy hurt. My guy got really bad whenever I ate salad-the lettuce really hurt him, oh and anything citrus. Some other gassy things are spicy foods, cabbage, broccoli, eggs, cucumbers. It may not be a huge cure, but it might help a bit.

My friends baby had colic. She swears by the colic tablets. They are 100% natural and are in the vitamin section at wal-mart. I would try that. I also put my baby on his stomach and rub his back?? I dint know if this helps but it sure cant hurt. They also make different formulas that you can by, I believe Enfamil makes a gentle-ease formula.
