Also, there is a lot of peculiarly British humour embedded in it - some dialogue is hilarious to them, but not to the rest of the world! I wouldn't worry if you don't get it, it's not that funny unless you've been to Britain. You could look up the word 'whimsical'.
You could consider that it's meant to be a comedy; if you don't find it all that funny, it's just not that funny - to you.
Sci-fi fans will read a deeper meaning into it, but it isn't meant to be a serious film. Think of it as a conservative Englishman on holiday, trying to cope with foreign habits, stay alive, have fun, and not lose his dignity.

Fantastic movie, but the book series is much better.
For kids who don't read "good," they'll never understand.
HG2G is a modern day version of Monty Python.
Imbecility is the killer for cult classics for most of the populace. The majority of the population "just don't get it and never will."
Just read the books. You are making an effort and this is all it takes.

If you read the book the movie is a whole lot easier to understand. Take the time to read it then watch the movie again.

I watched the PBS series when I was a kid, and my mom read us the book. Sorry, no CLIFFNOTES available on that classic!
